Jane’s Walk was inaugurated on May 5, 2007 in Toronto by a group of Jane Jacobs’ friends and colleagues who wanted to honour her ideas and legacy. They decided upon a simple, adaptable, and what would prove to be, an internationally successful concept – free neighbourhood walking tours led by local volunteers.

Since then, Jane’s Walk has been successfully exported and adapted to 68 cities in 9 countries in 2010 with 424 neighbourhood tours offered. Volunteer led walks were offered in Berlin, Madrid, La Paloma Uruguay, Lusaka Zambia, Goa and Mumbai India and three walks in Dublin, Ireland in 2010. In 2011, Jane’s Walk will be happening in China, Singapore, Amsterdam and Istanbul.

The event and its namesake, Jane Jacobs, mobilizes local residents around the world to get out and share the stories of the urban spaces they know and love, to meet neighbours, to explore common cause in making improvements and celebrating their successes.

In the US, Jane’s Walks has really taken off with 32 cities coming together with a roster of 66 walks in such places as Chattanooga Tennessee, Seattle, Syracus, Santa Fe, San Juan, Moscow Idaho, Los Angeles, Cleveland, Anchorage and Pittsburgh. Our organizing partner there is the Center for the Living City.

Check back in the coming weeks to learn more about where Jane’s Walks are happening around the world in 2011.
