Discover Oliver East! The gems, the history, the people.
Leaving Oliver Park we will walk east along 103 Avenue towards 115 Street and walk through Kitchener Park. Here we stop to view the amazing mural on the utility building!
We go south on 114 Street to 102 Avenue, cross the street and go east along 102 Avenue to Railtown Park.
Do you know or remember what occupied this land? Follow the pedestrian/bike path to the crossroad turn south following the path to Jasper Avenue. Look left ...imagine what structure stood there.
We cross Jasper Avenue and walk up the slight incline to the alleyway and turn left, then right to follow the pedestrian/bike path. Here is where you can catch the Radial Railway Streetcar to Old Strathcona during the summer months.
Following the pathway to 100 Avenue , turn right and walk west along 100 Avenue. As you cross 110 Street, look south and you can see a glimpse of St Joachim's Church. Continue along 100 Avenue to 111 Street. Looking north imagine rows of greenhouses with flowers galore in full bloom! This was the site of Ramsey Greenhouses (1905-1944), the largest greenhouses in western Canada.
Crossing the street, continue west along the Avenue, you come to the Edmonton General Hospital which was built in 1895. It was a three storey brick building. Over the years various expansions have taken place. For the last two years, what Christmas spectacle takes place here?
Continue along 100 Avenue, look across the street to the Victoria Avenues houses (11219, 11223, 11229). Do you know what famous woman lived a few years at 11229? Across the street at 11302, Judge Lucien Dubuc lived from 1912 to 1956.
Continuing down the avenue to 114 Street, look south and you see the magnificient Westminister Apartment built in 1912.
As you continue west, you approach Le Marchand Mansion on the south side of the avenue.It was built between 1909-1911 as "the most luxurious of its kind in Canada" for Rene Lemarchand. (and that's another story!) Across the parking lot is Grant Notley Park. Here you have a wonderful vista of the river valley!
Crossing 116 Street, turn right and go north we pass Fresh Cafe, a quaint cafe. Continuing along 116 Street, crossing Jasper Avenue, turn left and walk along Jasper Avenue to 118 Street. Do you remember what grocery chain once occupied this site?
At 118 Street turn north and walk to 103 Avenue passing the west side of Oliver School. At 103 Avenue cross the street where you arrive at Oliver Park and the Oliver Community League Hall.
